The AS/NZS 3000:2018 is now mandatory. Are you ready?
Chapter Four of the Wiring Rules details the selection and installation of electrical equipment to ensure safety. And as of 1 January, the 2018 Edition of the AS/NZ3000 Wiring Rules has come into effect.
Legrand technical director Dennis Galvin discusses important changes to the Chapter Four Rules.
“The latest revisions to Chapter Four of the AS/NZ3000 Wiring Rules are incremental in nature, but provide important additional safety guidelines that have been presented in a more intuitive and easy-to-understand way,” says Dennis.

Providing a more standardised approach across the industry, there is less possibility for an incorrect interpretation.
Important information to know:
Overseas outlets
Now allows the installation of UK, US, French and German outlets, provide they conform to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard for apertures and as long as they can accept only one type of plug.
Recessed luminaires
The Chapter Four section on recessed luminaires is more comprehensive than ever before, providing more stringent requirements and easier-to-understand guidelines especially with regard to installation in proximity to insulation material.
Isolation issues
The 2018 Wiring Rules also introduce significant rules that require isolation switches on gas appliances—including gas heaters—stipulating that they need to be double-pole. This addresses the hazard associated with single-pole connections where it is possible to generate a voltage between neutral and earth during switching, thereby providing the potential to ignite gas.
