Proven UK technology offers grid insights as Australia’s electrification accelerates

As Australia prepares for surging rooftop solar exports, growing home battery use and EV adoption, a UK-developed technology is providing a roadmap for managing low-voltage networks under pressure.

EA Technology’s VisNet Hubs currently support more than 5.5 million homes in the UK, giving Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) real-time visibility of grid performance. Installed at substations, each hub monitors voltage and current 16,000 times per second, delivering over 28 million times more data than a standard smart meter.

The system’s grid-edge intelligence has proven effective in predicting up to 71% of low-voltage network faults a year in advance, helping DNSPs improve reliability and defer costly network upgrades.

“Grid-edge intelligence helps DNSPs maintain reliability while optimising hosting capacity for solar, batteries and EVs,” EA Technology Australia managing director Neil Davies says.

“Stacked value monitoring transforms the grid by preventing faults, restoring power faster and providing accurate hosting capacity data.”

With around 80% of Australia’s grid built with overhead cables, EA Technology will introduce VisNet View in March 2026, a pole-mounted version of the VisNet Hub designed for Australia’s climate and dispersed network. The device operates in temperatures from –30°C to +65°C and provides DNSPs with real-time data to manage faults, constraints and capacity.

Both VisNet Hub and VisNet View will support the operation of Dynamic Operating Envelopes, enabling flexible exports and future flexibility markets as Australia transitions to a distributed energy future.
