Minamata convention aims to phase out mercury-containing products

The Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water recently led the Australian delegation to the Fifth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP5), in Geneva, Switzerland.

The conference placed significant focus on the phase-out of fluorescent lamps. Decisions from this recent and previous conventions form the following picture:

The decisions by COP5 will undergo additional scrutiny by the Australian Government in 2024, before formal adoption. This scrutiny process will include consideration by the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT).
