LCA launches campaign to change NCC rules on exit signs

The Lighting Council of Australia (LCA) has launched a campaign to change the National Construction Code’s rules on exit signs.

Currently, battery back up signs must meet 8cd/m² while photoluminescent exit lights only need to achieve 30mcd/m².

LCA staff have liaised with all the major associations in the fire, emergency and electrical industries and have had preliminary meetings with the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB).

Preliminary comparison testing by LCA showcases how poor the photoluminescent exit signs are and how quickly they fade. The campaign will help raise public and industry awareness of concerns while lobbying the ABCB to correct this error in the code and inform customers and contractors about the consequences of using an unsafe product.
