Introducing MOXIE musical showerhead
There’s something about singing in the bathroom that is quite cathartic. More than anything it allows you to realise your (mostly) unattainable dream of being a good singer. Nay, a great one.
Even one half of legendary folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon, once wrote: “I used to go (and play my guitar) in the bathroom, because the bathroom had tiles, so it was a slight echo chamber. I’d turn on the faucet so that water would run – I like that sound, it’s very soothing to me – and I’d play. In the dark.”

Further, Jon Anderson, the lead singer of progressive rock band Yes, installed tiles in his recording studio to emulate the sound of singing in the bathroom.
These days, though, it would appear that more people are interested in playing Angry Birds than singing a song by The Byrds. Research from marketing agency 11mark has shown that 75% of smart phone owners use their devices while in the bathroom. God forbid they take a call.
Now, to embrace the demand for constant connectivity, plumbing fixture manufacturer Kohler has introduced the Kohler Moxie – a 1.5W, 4Ω Bluetooth-enabled loudspeaker that sits inside the showerhead.
“We’re seeing a growing demand for music in the bathroom,” says Kohler performance showering product manager Leslie Bronson.
“The Moxie showerhead is the first of its kind to combine the delivery of water and music. And with the proximity of the Bluetooth-enabled wireless speaker, bathers are simultaneously showered with music and a best-in-class spray experience.”
The Moxie showerhead syncs with any Bluetooth-enabled device — smart phone or mp3 player — and streams music directly into the shower. But the fun doesn’t stop there; the speaker pod can also be removed for enjoyment on the go, throughout the rest of the bathroom and beyond.
The speaker pod is recharged via USB and each charge offers up to 7 hours of play time.
“Smart phones are transforming the way people access music,” Leslie says.
“Half of all smart phone users stream music directly from their devices. The Moxie showerhead takes accessibility to a whole new level. It offers a convenient, stylish sound boost. It’s like having your own mobile DJ.”
The Kohler Moxie showerhead is installed in the same fashion as a standard showerhead, which is quite easy for custom installers to do.
Simply loosen the nut above the old showerhead to remove it, as well as any mineral deposits of old Teflon tape from the shower arm threads. Once that’s done, apply new tape to the threads then attach the Moxie showerhead and turn it clockwise. Finally, drape a cloth over the nut and tighten it with a wrench.
To sync, turn the speaker on by holding the button and a blue light will flash. To pair your device with the speaker, turn your device on to discoverable mode and it will pair automatically.
“The wireless speaker is water resistant. Heat isn’t a problem because the silicon inside the showerhead creates a heat barrier, all the components inside are sealed — virtually no water can reach the electronics inside.
“Further, the sound of the water from the showerhead and the sound from the speaker operate over different frequencies, which helps to provide a clear definition of sound.
“The only thing exposed to water is the speaker membrane behind the holes. And that’s an area where water can’t go through. There are no electrical parts that are in contact. The only thing that could go wrong is if the speaker is dropped in water and the USB port isn’t properly sealed.”
