NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe has re-issued a public warning to consumers and industry to not purchase or install Infinity brand TPS or Orange Round electrical cable.

Rod says Fair Trading had been advised by the liquidator of Infinity Cable Company, Crouch Amirbeaggi, that a large quantity of TPS and Orange Round cable was recently stolen from the Infinity warehouse in Wetherill Park.

“I am very concerned the people responsible for this theft will attempt to sell this banned product,” he says.

The insulated electrical cables are commonly used for household electrical wiring. The cables concerned include:

· All TPS cable – All sizes and configurations of ‘Polymeric Insulated Electrical Cable which is PVC Sheathed, PVC Insulated, Flat and Flexible Low Voltage Electrical Cable’ also commonly known as ‘TPS’ imported and sold by Infinity Cable Co Pty Ltd; and

· All Orange Round cable – All sizes and configurations of ‘Polymeric Insulated Electrical Cable and which is PVC Sheathed, PVC Insulated, Round and Flexible Low Voltage Electrical Cable’ also commonly known as ‘Orange Round’ imported and sold by Infinity Cable Co Pty Ltd.

Deterioration of the insulation on the cables over time could cause wires to become exposed and potentially result in an electrical shock or fire. There is no immediate safety threat but the cables may fail and break down over time.

Fair Trading issued a prohibition notice on 9 October under Section 21 of the Electricity (Consumer Safety)

Act 2004 banning the sale of all TPS and Orange Round cables.

Infinity Cable Company Pty Ltd entered into liquidation on 26 September 2013.

Rod says Fair Trading is warning consumers and traders in the strongest possible terms to not purchase or use this product.

“Unused Infinity cables should be returned to the place of purchase by electricians, where they will be entitled to refunds on any unused cabling they have bought,” he says.

“None of this TPS or Orange Round cabling should be used by electricians in doing electrical installation work.”

On 27 September 2013, Fair Trading issued a public warning following a period of negotiation with Infinity regarding the quality and safety of their TPS and Orange Round cables.

Anyone with information regarding stolen Infinity electrical cable should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Cables and wiring may not be sold in NSW unless they are safe. It is an offence under the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 to sell unsafe electrical articles or appliances.

Anyone with concerns about the cables should contact Fair Trading on 13 32 20. For more information go to www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au
