This reform is a positive sign for workers and businesses as the economy will become more productive and competitive. It will assist in housing affordability by easing workforce shortages that are preventing construction of more homes.
The 2025/26 Budget will enable the design and implementation of the scheme through the National Competition Policy (NCP) framework. The government has also committed $900 million into the National Productivity Fund to drive NCP reforms.
A national license will help electricians to seamlessly work across states and territories without reapplying for a separate licence or payment of additional fees. By removing unnecessary barriers, this scheme will encourage electricians to go where required in the industry.
The scheme relates to high-risk occupations and it will address the need for high standards while removing delays and multiple fees for tradies.
