In December 2012, the Australian/New Zealand Standard committee EL--001 released the second amendment to AS/NZS 3000:2007 (Wiring Rules). Among many other additions or alterations to the Standard, a new Clause 4.5.2.3.2 requires the installation of a warning sign.

Where recessed luminaires are installed in an accessible roof space, a permanent and legible warning sign shall be installed in the roof space adjacent to the access panel, in a position that is visible to a person entering the space.

The sign shall comply with AS 1319 and contain the words shown in Figure 4.8 with a minimum size of lettering of 10mm. AS 1319 (also known as AS/NZS 1319) sets out lettering height, font, viewing distance and the specific colour of yellow background for this sign.

The sign must be fitted within the roof space, in view and within 2m of each access panel. ECV, in consultation with Repelec, has designed a new warning sign that meets the requirements of this second amendment.

To meet the requirement of “permanent”, this sign has been designed using flexible yet durable plastic that will not only prevent personal injury to any person in the roof, it will not break, tear or deteriorate like paper or cardboard from rough handling, impact, moisture or vermin.

The new Down Light Warning Sign is proudly Distributed by Repelec, and will be available from your local electrical wholesaler and many hardware and lighting outlets from February 2013.
