Charging ahead: The roadmap of Australia’s energy future
The National Roadmap for Bidirectional Electrical Vehicle Charging, delivered by enX Consulting and commissioned by ARENA in partnership with RACE for 2030, will shape Australia’s energy future.
The roadmap is to set the foundation on which industry and government and stakeholders can identify and adopt policy settings and strategy initiatives to realise the benefits of bidirectional EV charging for Australians.

The roadmap demonstrates that bidirectional charging has the potential to become one of the largest forms of flexible energy storage in Australia and to material reduce electricity costs for millions, while accelerating national emissions reduction.
Not yet directly available to Australians, however benefits of the technology include energy storage, reduced power bills and grid support.
ARENA chief executive Darren Miller says that bidirectional charging, particularly vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology is the future of distributed energy storage.
“By the early 2030s, the battery capacity of our electric vehicle fleet is projected to outstrip all other forms of energy storage in the national electricity market,” he says.
“With estimates suggesting 1.5 million EVs on Australian roads by 2030, even 10% if those adopting V2G could meet 37% of the NEM’s total storage needs while also giving Australians control over their contribution to the clean energy transition.”
