Cablemakers making a difference in North Queensland

Recently North Queensland was about to lose a vital lifeline to the electrical industry with the closure of the only cable distribution warehouse in the region.

With local projects in the firing line, a Brisbane based company saw a unique opportunity to take over the venture as a perfect fit to their extensive portfolio of existing businesses across Australia.

In January 2012, the 100% Australian owned and operated business Cablemakers was born and is now the only fully stocked cable warehouse in North Queensland.

With the only 8 tonne cutting machine north of Brisbane, they can provide a cut to length- service to suit the local electrical industry saving on time and cost to customers.

Branch manager Glenn Fry says Cablemakers are servicing the mining, industrial, contractor and wholesale markets in the region with quality products in minimal time.

“With an impressive warehouse at 1102m2 we are able to carry over $2 million worth of stock at any one time, enabling us to keep up with the demand from the local industries,” Glenn says.

“We have the ability to source, stock and supply an extensive range of cables and custom cut it to any length with guaranteed same day service.”

“Being a relatively young company we are in the unique position of combining the new with the old, offering exciting and innovative new products as well as treasuring the values of quality service with a personal touch.”

Having over 10 years’ experience in the electrical industry, Glenn has a great understanding of the evolving market with an appreciation for quality service and personal relationships.

The Townsville based operation services from Weipa to Mackay and even out to Mt Isa and hope to expand over the coming years.

General Manager Neil Hanson says there is enormous potential for growth in the business in regional Australia as presently the products are predominately produced and stocked in the major cities.

“Currently cable products warehoused in Brisbane endure long transport lead times for delivery. Whereas having stocks in Townsville provides a locally base stocking facility to service the North Queensland region,” he says.

“We will enjoy taking the Cablemakers business model to other regions in Australia and continue to supply high quality products in a timely fashion to our valued customers.”

“The construction market is demanding rapid response times for supplying to projects and we must meet this challenge.”
