Western Australia’s Building and Energy division has released guidance for electrical contractors on installing battery energy storage systems (BESS), clarifying compliance obligations when working with existing photovoltaic (PV) arrays.

The guidance distinguishes between repairs and alterations, outlining how each affects compliance with current electrical standards. Building and Energy stressed that responsibility for ensuring compliance rests with the electrical contractor carrying out the work.

As installations vary from site to site, contractors are advised to conduct thorough inspections and assess equipment ratings and conditions to determine any additional work needed to ensure the system remains safe and fit for purpose after modifications or repairs.
