Standards Australia has released a free battery safety guide to help Australia accelerate its transition to clean energy.

The SA TS 5398:2025, Electrical Energy Storage Equipment – Safety Requirements, is designed to support the deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across homes and small businesses.

Australia’s net-zero ambitions rely on widespread adoption of renewable energy technologies, including rooftop solar and battery storage. These technologies empower households and small businesses to generate, store and use clean energy more efficiently.

This new specification is designed to future-proof safety requirements.

“Technical specifications for battery storage are essential to the delivery of technology that will help Australia meet its net-zero goals,” Standards Australia chief executive Rod Balding says.

“They provide the foundation for safe, reliable energy systems and give consumers, regulators and industry the confidence to invest in clean energy. That is why we are supporting Australians by making this guide freely available.”

Key benefits of the technical specification include future-proofing, consumer protection and industry confidence.

TS 5398 is closely aligned with the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, part of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). This initiative offers a 30% upfront discount on eligible battery systems connected to rooftop solar.

To qualify, systems must meet key criteria, including use of Clean Energy Council (CEC)-approved products, installation by CEC-accredited professionals and compliance with national safety standards, such as AS/NZS 5139 Battery Energy Storage System Installation Requirements and emerging specifications like TS 5398. In New South Wales, TS 5398 also supports the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Incentives, which offer up to $1,500 for connecting batteries to a VPP.

TS 5398 is available free of charge through the Standards Australia Store.
