In a first for the Australian construction sector, Victorian-based concrete and quarry product supplier Mawsons has entered a power purchase agreement (PPA) with ENGIE to source 100% of its mains electricity from firmed renewable sources.

Mawsons is aiming to transition to renewable energy and in doing so, significantly reduce its environmental impact of its operations across regional Victoria and southern NSW. The commitment will see Mawsons reduce its carbon emissions by 5,200 tonnes per year.

“This agreement is a tangible example of one of the things that ENGIE does best – partner with progressive companies looking to access green energy, secured and delivered at competitive long-term prices,” ENGIE executive general manager, energy management Andrew Hyland says.

“Through our position in the market and our renewable and lower carbon generation assets, ENGIE is perfectly placed to deliver these outcomes for a range of customers. We are proud of our role in powering Australia’s energy transition.”

Through its environmental policies, wastewater and site management programs and transition to renewable energy sources, Mawsons is doing its part in what has long been considered a carbon intensive industry.

“This is the right thing to do and the right time to do it. We want to do our part to help reduce global warming and manage the risks of drought and bushfires in the future,” Mawsons managing director John Mawson says.

“We also believe in helping local industries to grow, and the renewable power sector is a major investor and employer in regional Australia.”
