LG releases white paper on air conditioners and energy savings in the Australian climate
Based on research conducted in November 2014, the whitepaper delves into how Australians use their air conditioners – when and how often, what energy saving techniques they use and what might motivate them to change their habits. The piece builds on a previous survey commissioned by LG in December 2013 into Australian’s general knowledge of their home air conditioning units in relation to their electricity bill.
Some key findings from the whitepaper include:
• A majority of Australians who own air conditioners said saving money on their electricity bill is either very important or important to them
• Half of Australians who own air conditioners said they did not understand the breakdown of their electricity bill
• Men seem more confident that they understand the breakdown, with 57.8% saying they understood vs. 44.1% of women.
• Younger generations are less likely to claim they understand, while older Australians felt they had a better understanding.

• The top three methods to save money on their air conditioner’s electricity usage used by Australian air conditioner owners are:
1. Using it sparingly
2. Using fans
3. Keeping their AC at a relatively high temperature – e.g. 25-28 degrees
“In a country that gets as hot as Australia, most people couldn’t live without air conditioning. With that unfortunately comes an energy price tag so being able to better manage their energy usage is crucial,” said Lambro Skropidis, General Manager Marketing at LG Australia. “Where things can get complicated is in knowing how to manage an air conditioners’ energy usage. The challenge for us at LG is in how we educate Australians to use available technologies to take control of their energy consumption. This whitepaper aims to help demystify that for consumers.”
Outlining the contradictions in Australian attitudes and actions in regards to their air conditioner and energy savings, LG makes recommendations for Australians to leverage available technologies and take control of their energy consumption. LG sees a large educational opportunity reflected in the results of the survey.
“With this whitepaper, we’re aiming to educate Aussies across the country ––about how to make use of new technologies to tailor their air conditioner’s energy consumption to their needs,” said Skropidis.
LG’s newest split system air conditioner features, such as Active Energy Control and WiFi Smart Control, allow Australian consumers to tailor energy usage to a specific need with a push of a button or through their smart phones. This gives Australians more control than beyond turning the air conditioner off or turning on a fan.
