Communities across the Pacific need the support of Australian volunteer health education, water and sanitation, renewable energy and environmental education professionals.

AVI North Pacific Country Manager Annie Himmelsteib says Australian Volunteers are a very important asset to the Pacific region. More local organisations are looking for volunteer support through Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID), of which AVI is a key partner with AusAID.

“As part of their assignments these volunteers will contribute to the sustainability of small Pacific nations, income generation initiatives and increased ‘know how’ of local communities,” Annie says.

“In the Marshall Islands the energy and water sectors are in need of skilled volunteers who have technical knowledge in maintaining water and electrical systems, and the ability to train local staff in maintenance and occupation health and safety.

“Vocational education teachers are also needed in Palau to teach trainers in the field agriculture and small engine mechanics, with particular reference to Palau’s boating and water based tourism industries.

“These wonderful opportunities will allow volunteers to work closely with local communities and provide them with the capacity to live and work in their home islands rather than going overseas to find a job.”

According to Annie, Palau is also known for amazing corals, exceptional diving and snorkelling, and beautiful rock islands.

“The geography of the country lends itself to many outdoor activities, so there is no shortage of things for a volunteer to do when they are not working.”

Through the Australian Volunteers for International Development program, an Australian Government – AusAID initiative, all volunteers receive financial support, including airfares, visas, accommodation, a living allowance, insurance, and pre-departure training, in-country and post-assignment support.
